Basic information about
the Ukrainian language
“Each language is an outlook that ent oils another world, reproduces it, while the common world is not a starting point but a regulatory principle” (European Dictionary of Philosophy. – K.: Spirit and Letter, 2011. – P. 15).
The Ukrainian language is Indo -European. It contains a large number of words that are common to other Indo -European languages: Ukr. мати, матері, Gr. meter, Lat. mater, Eng. mother, Germ. Mutter, Fr. mère, Ital. madre, Arm. mair; Ukr. око, Gr. osse, Lat. oculus, Eng. eye, Germ. Auge , chio, Arm. akn; Ukr. вовк, Gr. lykos, Lat. lupus, Eng. wolf, Germ. Wolf, Fr. loup; Ukr. ніч, Gr. Nyks, Lat. nox, Eng. night, Germ. Nacht, Fr. nuit, Ital. notte; Ukr. новий, Gr. neos, Lat. novus, Eng. new, Germ. Neu, Fr. nouveau, Ital. nuovo.
Ukrainian as a separate group of the Slavonic dialects emerged in the VI th century, when Slavonic unity collapsed. Since then, more than 13 thousand words, almost all grammatical means, and even largely phonetic peculiarities have been preserved in it.
Historians assume that in the IX th century in the days of Prince Oskold in Kyiv, a chronicle was completed, which, however, did not survive: its fragments entered the "Tale of Bygone Years" (early XIIth century). Obviously, it was written in the language that Ukrainians speak now.
When in 988 Volodymy r the Great introduced Christianity in Rus -Ukraine, then as a literary he took the Bulgarian language, not the local one, into which liturgical books had already been translated. For many centuries, this language had been written and read in Ukraine, being mixed with truly Ukrainian words and word forms. A Ukrainian philosopher Hryhorii Skovoroda wrote his works in that language at the end of the XVIII th century.
Meantime, the folk Ukrainian language was being developed orally: people composed songs, tales, legends, retellings, dumas, proverbs and sayings and passed them from generation to generation. The folk literature contains more than 200 thousand songs.
